What is a chemical sponge?

Chemical sponges will remove most soot depending on the severity of smoke damage but can only be used once so must be discarded after use. Sometimes it is possible to get extra use by splitting the chemical sponge in half to provide an extra two clean sides to use.

Repainting after the use of chemical sponges can be tricky. First question to ask is, “is the surface flat or gloss painted?”

If it’s a gloss/semi gloss finish, wipe over the already chemical-sponged area with a damp cloth, cleaning off any remaining residue/smear. If/when there is no soot residue remaining, you can immediately start painting without the need for further preparation.

If the surface has a flat/matt painted finish you will need to apply a specially formulated sealer/undercoat that covers soot, before you start repainting
